Running Ooo 3.1 using Vista SP2 on an AMD Turion 64 2.0Ghz portable.
You will know that OpenOffice behaves like much application software
in that if you try to start it when it is already running, it merely
hands you back to the existing instance, instead of creating a second
one. That's sensible, of course. If, when you close OpenOffice, it
fails for some reason to terminate all its processes properly and
leaves something occupying memory, it is possible that any subsequent
attempt to start it will detect the failed process and attempt to
reawaken that or hand your new document to that - but inevitably fail
to do so, of course.
As has already been suggested, the solution is either to use Task
Manager to find and end the relevant process(es) or - if necessary or
easier - just to log out and in again or even to restart Windows to
achieve the same effect.
I trust this helps.
