If OO won't launch, you've probably downloaded the wrong version for your operating system. What version of OSX and OO are you using?
I presume that, by "interfering," you mean that when you try to open a file that should open in another application, it tries instead to open in OO. (And then fails, because OO isn't working for you at the moment.) To change this behavior, select the file and Get Info on it. In the Get Info window, you'll see the "Open with" option. Use it to select or browse to the correct application. Then, directly beneath, click "Change All" -- thereafter, all files of that type will open in the application you chose.
