The icon tool bar under File Edit View etc., fifth button over is a
little piece of paper with a pencil on it. Click it. It says "Edit
File". You'll be able to edit the file now.

A question. Where are the documents stored that you are trying to edit?
Are they held on a CD or DVD? If they are then you cannot edit the
documents and then save them directly onto the CD or DVD. When you open
a document from a CD or DVD you will then need to do >File >Save as onto
the hard drive of your computer. Yu can then write the file back to the
CD or DVD by copying and pasting it.
I hope that helps. If I am barking up the wrong tree then please let us
know what operating system you are using (XP, Vista, Linux or Apple OSX)
and what version of OpenOffice.org are you running
