Hi,

Paragraph numbering... I just don't get it.

Hopefully someone can explain how it should work please?, because it's
not obvious to me and after a couple hours trying it's becoming quite
frustrating.

File | New | Text Document

Enter this text:

title one
para one
title two
para two
title two point one
para two point one
title three
para three

Now click on the first line, then click the toolbar: Numbering On/Off.

Repeat for the other "title" lines.

The document now looks like this:

  1. title one
para one
  1. title two
para two
  1. title two point one
para two point one
  1. title three
para three

Ok, that obviously isn't quite what was intended, but I found a way to
fix it:-

Click on the second line, then click the toolbar: Numbering On/Off.
Click on the third line, then click the toolbar: Numbering On/Off.
Click again on the third line, then click the toolbar: Numbering On/Off.
Click again on the second line, then click the toolbar: Numbering On/Off.

So now it looks like this:

  1. title one
para one
  2. title two
para two
  1. title two point one
para two point one
  1. title three
para three

And with a bit more fiddling of the toolbar buttons I can get it to
look just the way I want:

  1. title one
      para one
  2. title two
      para two
  2.1 title two point one
      para two point one
  3. title three
      para three

Cool! ;)

But it's obvious that this method of beating OOo into submission isn't
the way it's supposed to work. So could someone kindly explain how
it's meant to be done please? Even a gentle rtfm would restore my
sanity.

Also, even if the above method is an abuse of OOo, how would I recover
from the situation where all sections are titled "1. title..." so to
tell it manually for each of these sections *not* to restart
numbering? In the Paragraph formatting dialog, Outline & Numbering
tab, Restart at this paragraph is *not* ticked. <-- that's what I
don't get!

Btw, I did try selecting 'Heading 1', 'Heading 2', etc. from the
toolbar dropdown list, but these also change the character font size
etc. whereas I would prefer to keep one style throughout. And in any
case these selections appeared not to fix the problem so I submit to
displaying my ignorance and asking here instead.

Thanks!
