On any computer I've ever used it wasn't down to the application (e.g.
Firefox) to decide which monitor to use. Instead it was down to the OS.
On some systems you choose with a switch in software; on others you
choose with a hardware switch. For example my laptop has additional keys
(accessed via a "Function" key which is similar to Alt or Ctrl) to
switch monitors, mute sound, adjust sound volume, adjust brightness etc.
On Windows, simply connecting the laptop to a TV via an HDMI cable
automagically duplicates the display to the TV, with appropriate scaling.
There is a switch to choose whether you want monitor 1, monitor 2, or
both. On the Acer laptop it is Fn F5. In the ATI setup (and most
others) there is an option to clone the image on both monitors or to
extend the desk top onto both monitors. That is the mode chosen to use
the Sun Console presenter. Then in "Slide Show" "Slide Show Settings"
is an option for "Multiple Displays." That is where I was able to
choose to put the presentation on Monitor 2 rather than Monitor 1 (which
is the default).
When the computer is set for extended dual-mode, Firefox goes to Monitor
2 when Firefox is opened. IE opens in Monitor 1. I can't find any
selection in Firefox to choose the monitor.
