Yes the automatic file extension is turned on, and the files are saved odt. I finally got it to work by uninstalling the OO program and reinstalling it. I don't have a clue what happened to cause this, but it seems to be working now.
Thanks for the reply

When I try to open a document an error box appears that says document does not exist.....but it does, so I first have to open the Open Office program, click file, open, and then locate the document in my document folder and click on it....then guess what...yeah, it opens???? Do I need to uninstall OO and reinstall it, or is there more serious issue. I have the best virus protection available and this is the only program giving me any problems. What can I do, this is very annoying, and time consuming.

Are your files saved with file extentions i.e. .ODT, .DOC etc.? If not,
Windows (I assume you're running Windows) won't recognize the file
type. When you create a file and use "Save as", ensure automatic file
name extension is turned on. If this is the cause, you can fix those
files, by renaming them to include the file type.
