Can you tell us which version of OpenOffice.org you are using, the
operating system they are running under and the printer they are using?
Generally the problem is that you have to walk through a number of steps
to get envelopes to print correctly. I'll summarize the Windows issue
using an HP laser printer that I'm using.

1.  Go File->Insert Envelope

2. Click the Format tab

3. On the "Size" drop down list select the appropriate envelope size (A
US Env. 10" in my case)

4. Click the Printer tab

5. Select the proper orientation for the envelope based on how your
printer feeds an envelope (for an HP LJ 1200, it's a center feed with
the short side entering the printer first)

6. Select the "Setup" button

7. In the resulting dialog box, Select the "Properties" button to get
to the printer driver

8. You need to tell the driver you are using the size paper you told
OpenOffice.org about in step 3. This varies based on the printer. For
the LaserJet 1200 PCL driver, you click the "Advanced" Button at the
bottom of the screen, on the next screen select the paper size
("Envelope 10" in my case), click OK, OK again and OK one more time.

9. Now you can go back to the Envelope tab and fill in your proper
address.
10. I then select New Doc--and I have an envelope that will print in my
printer. I make it a new document because I knew I was going to now
save it as a template so I didn't have to go through this one more time
<grin>, but now could just use File->New->Templates and Documents,
select my envelope template, and have all the above set up.

There is no question this is more complex and error prone than it is in
"that other" Office product. The key difference is that, unlike in
Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org doesn't seem to get word to the printer
driver that the paper size is now the envelope size.

I have found that none of the major word processors (WP, Word, OO) do
envelopes very easlily. I have been using a separate program called
"Labels Unlimited" version 2.0 which I bought years ago from Parson's
Technology. Works great on envelopes of ANY size.

Parson's Technology was bought out by Intuit years ago.
