To do that you need to define a custom format--which isn't as complex as it might sound at first.

Select the cell and then select Format->Cells. In the box labeled "Format code" type "mmmm d" as your custom format. That will display "June 7" in the cell in question, and that format will be available in the list of date formats for this spreadsheet.
