That may be so in some cases. The OO site has a page where CD copies
can be ordered from 3rd-party suppliers (http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/index.html#cdrom
). Flexiety (they sell Windows versions in the US) offers a CD-only
option for $13.95, a "Premier Support Edition" for $35.95, and a "Plus
Updates and Support" version for $49.95 (http://www.flexiety.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=FSCS&Category_Code=OpenOffice_org
).
I emailed them on 7/7/09, asking for details about their support and
updates, but haven't gotten a response. So it may be that the "email
and online support" they charge for amounts to nothing more than
pointing people to this list and the OO forums. Similarly, I can't
tell whether their "quarterly updates" involve mailing customers new
CDs or merely notifying them when updated versions become available
for download at the OO site.
A bit of searching on Amazon reveals 2 vendors offering CD copies for
$2 plus shipping (no support offered), which is a lot more reasonable.
There are hundreds of copies being auctioned on eBay, too.
