I have a particular document that is updated regularly, and it is
critical that those working with the document (both in print and in
OOo) know with which version they are working. Therefore, each page
currently has a footer with the version datetime, and new saved
versions are saved with the version datetime as the filename.

Is there a way to save users a step and insert the filename into the
footer of the file? I understand that some printers can be configured
for this, but I'd really like it to be part of the file itself. When
the user saves as a new file name, the new file name is updated in the
relevant part of the footer.

I am aware of version control systems but for this particular
application this is the best way for the job, so I do not need
suggestions on a workflow change even though I know it sounds unusual.
Thanks!

Dotan,

Using the Insert -> Fields -> Other (Ctl+F2), you can select what you want inserted and where. The pop-up box has several tabs, the first is Document with File name as an option. This should update each time the file is saved using the "Save As" option. It worked here on XP with OOo v3.1.

Hope this helps.
