I don't know. But here's a rather messy workaround:
o Create a header or footer.
o Put the cursor into the header or footer and go to Insert |
Fields > | Other... | Document.
o Under Document, select Statistics, and under Select, select Words.
o Click Insert and Close.
o As you work, update the word count using Tools | Update > | Fields
(or Tools | Update > | Update All) or - more simply - just press F9.
o When you have finished editing, edit or remove the header or
footer as necessary.
