By default, OOo writes files in the standardized Open Document Format types, which all but the most recent update of Office 2007 don't understand at all. The current version sort of does, but wherever the standard allowed for interpretation, Microsoft came up with a different one than anybody else is using. For actual interoperability, you're best off to stick with the old Office XP formats (like .doc, not .odt or .docx). The 3.1 version of OOo can read the -x fietypes but I don't think it writes them.

You can either use the Save As dialog for individual files, or change your default filetypes to use the XP formats (Tools > Options - Load/Save - General).

If you can install on the receiving system, or plug in a USB drive, there are some other options, too. Best, of course, is to install OOo 3.1 there, too!
