John,
The behavior is normal, MS does not go by the open standards that
OpenOffice.org does. But you can "save as" to the required format, do
not add the extension allow OOo to do it and it should be fine.
If it shows your logged in on some of the OpenOffice.org sites then you
are logged in. Some of the site can be confusing at times.
