When using Open Office today the files (Open Office writer) have been saved but have no icon against them indicating what type of file they are, just a picture of a blank page and if I try to open them from the folder in which they are saved a screen appears asking what application I want to use to open them (options include various programs - Adobe, media etc). If I go into Open Office and then click on Open files then I can open the file. This was not necessary until today. What do I need to do to correct this?
Just a guess - When you save a new file (or do a save as for an existing one) the file save dialog includes a checkbox "Automatic file name extensions" - most likely you accidentally un-ticked this, meaning no file name extension '.odt' for instance is being added. Just open the file, select File>Save As and ensure that this is ticked and save as the same name...that should do it.
