Check out chapter 8 of the OpenOffice.org users guide at

It has very good detail on working with graphics in Writer.
Thanks, Pete! I have tended to rely on
http://documentation.openoffice.org/ and the OpenOffice wiki - even
though Drew Jensen made me aware of the oooauthors project on another
question, a couple months ago. Your prompt will help reinforce that for
me, and for that at least I am grateful.
Unfortunately, the specific documentation did not get me any closer to
an answer, but I did appreciate this sentiment:
The positioning of graphics is often rather time-consuming and may be
very frustrating for both inexperienced and experienced users. As
Writer is a word processor rather than a desktop publishing program,
there are some limitations to the flexibility in positioning images
and it takes time to get things exactly as you would like them.
There might be some comfort in hearing that graphics positioning "is
often rather time-consuming and ... very frustrating for both
inexperienced and experienced users" - except that I would be more
comforted by information that makes the task predictable rather than
frustrating, and quick rather than time-consuming. I guess I have been
spoiled by a word processor that lets you "reveal" the details of format
constraints, and can't understand why a successor might do less, to the
point of making graphics positioning "time-consuming and ... very
frustrating for ... [even] experienced users". Oh, well.
Thanks for the pointer,
John
