Great! - definitely worth a read! I'm not sure it solves all problems,
but "Combining list and paragraph styles" looks promising, and I want to

Thanks, but that did not get to a solution: the previously identified
problems - essentially, the need for multiple list styles in the
embedded list, and the inability to inherit, as needed, from multiple
styles - still all remained. But I appreciate your suggestion - as well
as the subsequent suggestions to RTFM ;-) at support.openoffice.org and
documentation.openoffice.org, which I did know about.
