The anchor is "_as_ character," not "_to_ character". An object
anchored "as character" will become part of the text layout, acting
just like an oversized character.
Ah. Sorry for that sloppy oversight.
Let me digress to ask what should be a basic question - yet is not covered
in OO Help: How do you invoke a frame of a particular style? The
documentation at oooauthors.org seems to confirm my tedious process:
(1) Insert | Frame | OK - which inserts a frame of style "Frame"<*> and
opens the frame styles pane.
(2) In the frame styles pane, double-click on the desired style (which I
have named "Embedded_list"), to change from default frame style "Frame"<*>
to frame style "Embedded_list".
(3) [optional] Right-click in the new frame and choose "Anchor" =>
anchor_type.
(4) Click anywhere /outside/ the new frame to take the focus off frame
attributes.
(5) Click /inside/ the new frame to put the focus on a text insertion
point inside the frame.
Is that the way it is supposed to be done? (It seems to be 3-4 steps too
many.)
[<*> Annoyance:
- The default Page style is named "Default".
- The default Paragraph style is named "Default".
- The default Character style is named "Default".
So why is the default Frame style named "Frame"? - complicating
discussions, as in step (2) above. Am I missing something about this, or
is this just an inexcusable, if minor, design lapse?]
The structure of the paragraph is:
[text body paragraph...[line-break]
[frame
[list paragraph]
[list paragraph]
...
][line-break]
...after text
]
When you say "line-break" are you referring to what the Help calls "line
break" (Shift+Enter), or do you mean the paragraph break produced by a
simple Enter?
"As character" is a very useful type of anchoring since Writer's
other anchoring modes can be somewhat unstable and difficult to
manage, as you noticed already. I anchor things "as character" rather
than "to paragraph" wherever possible.
Anchor modes are *somewhat* unstable? - you have a talent for
understatement. A simple test: Try changing from the default "To
Paragraph" to "As Character" to "To Character" and back to "To
Paragraph" - is the frame still in the same place? But then, "As
Character" is tough to pin down exactly /where/ the anchor resides
(without a "reveal codes" function).
I thought to examine your example, to see how the frame is anchored and
possibly examine style characteristics, but it's read-only, so none of
the information is available. Any thoughts?
A 'read-only' document status in OOo is purely advisory: you can toggle
the read-only status just by clicking the "Edit File" button on the
toolbar--it's about fifth from the left and carries an icon that looks
like a pencil and paper.
Ah, yes; I should have known that, which makes your reply all the more
valuable. [For anyone reading this who also did not know: The "Edit File"
button is on the Standard toolbar - which I had kept turned off to
maximize workspace.]
