This won't be much help, but, from my point of view, it's the other way 'round.

:-)

But in either case, the _best_ thing you can do, to ensure that files transit 
as cleanly as possible in both directions (Word -> OOo or OOo -> Word) is to:

a) use styles for everything, and no "spot formatting" 

b) name your styles identically on both systems (so that they map cleanly, and 
to avoid proliferation) 

c) whichever application is your "origin", create a fresh "base" style 
(especially in Word, don't use "Normal" as your base for other styles - make 
one from scratch that is not dependent on Normal). 


That's for when you control both ends.

When you are dealing with random docs from all sorts of people of questionable 
hygiene and word-processing habits.... well that's another story.   Someone 
else will have to chime in with a set of "best defaults" or "best handling and 
pre-sets" or some-such.
