Richard, you solved the problem.  I opened a new spreadsheet, formatted the
cells to dates and enter a date in A1.  Cell B1 came up with Jan 2, 00.  I
then entered the date in A1 as 9/29/09 and it worked.  The problem was that
in A1 I was typing Sept 29, 09 as the date so I was not actually entering a
date in A1.
