I'm also new to OOo and not an expert.  I assume that by icons you mean the
icons for shown by Explorer. You could change the file option to point at
Write, Calc etc but it may be better to leave these convert them to the OOo
formats.  The safe way is to open each file, (like and .odt with Write) then
SaveAs with the same name and the default extension.
