I'm also new to OOo and not an expert. I assume that by icons you mean the
icons for shown by Explorer. You could change the file option to point at
Write, Calc etc but it may be better to leave these convert them to the OOo
formats. The safe way is to open each file, (like and .odt with Write) then
SaveAs with the same name and the default extension.

If you want to convert all at once, see:

for some macros.

Hope this helps

Dear sir, I installed your open office on my desktop pc,
replacing my ms office but my .doc file, .ppt etc are not displayed any
icons please help me with this...

The icons you see reflect the "file association" the operating system has been told to use as the default program for opening these files. It really isn't possible to have *no* icon. What probably happened was that during installation (or with newer releases, first use) of OpenOffice.org (OOo) you told it to be the default for files from MS Office, and the icons now being used are the unfamiliar OOo ones instead of those for Word, etc. The files themselves have not been changed at all. If you open one of them, the appropriate component of OOo (like Writer for .doc files) will be used. Now what matters is how you save the file. If you just use Save, it will keep the original extension (like .doc). If you use Save As, you can either choose the .odt filetype, or one of the .doc versions like the one for XP (or even something else). For Office 2007 formats (like .docx) you need to decide on an available filetype. In any case, make sure that the automatic file name extension is selected.

What you choose to use for saving is up to you -- what matters is how you plan to use the file. If you will be sending it to MS Office users, it's probably best to leave it with its original extension. They can't really use the filetypes (Open Document Format standard) used by OOo and other open-source programs, unless they install the Sun plugin that allows this compatibility. Office 2007 sp2 will read the ODF files, but MS chose to implement the standard in a different way that really messes up interoperability.

By the way, this is "your" open office as much as "ours" -- those of us on this mailing list are other users who volunteer our time to help each other.
