Is there any chance that you've done something with language settings that means it's using the wrong dictionary? Just a thought.... If that's happening, right-clicking on a "misspelled" word might show you suggestions in another language.

If you can live without the spelling check, the quickest thing would be to turn it off altogether for "while typing" operation. You can always ask for the check explicitly, but from what you say that is currently useless.
