Hi, Kelly, and welcome to OOo!
Writer is like Word, Calc is like Excel, Impress is like PowerPoint; all
of these OOo components can both read and write the MS Office filetypes.
Base is like Access but files can't be exchanged; Access tables can be
connected to Base or copied into it, but queries and reports need to be
recreated in Base. Most capabilities of Publisher can be obtained
through Writer and/or Draw, but the .pub files themselves can't be read
or written in OOo.
