(I'll continue top-posting to avoid confusion.)

The subscribed account really is (still) [email protected]. His messages, assuming this is a real person and not a troll or bot, are not routed through the moderator. I suspect that the confirmation messages are being trapped in a filter, although there is also some evidence that there may be a hole that allows third-party subscription of an account, and that third party may be either trapping his outgoing unsubscribe requests or discarding the confirmation messages. I tried to follow up on that possibility but have gotten no response (unless maybe it's the blast below). In any case, he is indeed getting the list messages from the listserver, because that account is recognized as a subscriber. The confirmation messages do not come from [email protected], but from [email protected], so they may not follow the same path. It's even possible for the path to be different for messages of the same type. For instance, in my trials of the users-thread approach some of the digest messages (also from users-help) got through, while others were trapped in the ISP filtering I've enabled. Go figure! I'm thinking that maybe the scads of e-mail addresses in these admin messages can trigger a filter, which further motivates me to separate that stuff out into a separate article and just have one link.

There have been others, though, who are indeed getting list traffic on accounts that are not subscribed. This may be due to passthrough from another account -- perhaps an old or different one of their own, or, again, there may be a third party involved. The only way to identify that account reliably is from the Return-Path header in a message the person receives from the list. The user may not even have access to the account, but he can still unsubscribe (as long as all the messages are passed through) by identifying the account name and unsubscribing using the indirect form ([email protected]). The confirmation message can be replied to from any account that gets it.

I'm going to top-post because... who would read all those frustrated "unsubscribe" messages again and get past them to something written below? Anyway, if Mr. Considine indeed subscribed from "[email protected]" then either he got the confirmation request -- five times -- and failed to follow through... or... there's a glitch and he didn't receive the messages from the listserver. HOWEVER, if Mr. Considine had originally subscribed from a different address (presumably one that's been forwarding his list-mail to "[email protected]") then can somebody tell me what he should be receiving from the listserver when he attempts to unsubscribe from "[email protected]"? Perhaps a message to the effect: "If you are receiving mail from [email protected] mailing list, please be aware that you are not subscribed under the name "[email protected]". If you used a different e-mail address to subscribe, try unsubscribing FROM that address. Also check your inbox at that address for a confirmation request from me (the listserver program). This listserver doesn't unsubscribe you just because any old person (or e-mail address) asks to unsubscribe you; it could be someone pretending to be a subscriber, playing a stupid prank. When I (the listserver) receive an unsubscribe request, I ask for confirmation from someone AT THE SUBSCRIBED ADDRESS, and I don't act until that confirmation (sent from that address) is received."

To whom it may concern,

I would like to unsubscribe from this Website. I do not want to receive other peoples useless Emails anymore I hope you get what you deserve for.
all the trouble that you have caused me!!!!!!!

[snip advertising and administrivia]
And a note to Mr. Considine, if he reads this far:

Sir,

If you are having legitimate trouble unsuscribing from this mailing list of volunteer users of OpenOffice, helping each other out, then we are trying to figure out the general case of why SOME people can't seem to unsubscribe. We don't control it - we just participate in a list that's owned and operated by somebody else. We feel your pain, but have no power to fix you up.

If on the other hand, you subscribed using a different address, and forwarded the mail
from that other address to "[email protected]", and now are not bright
enough to realize that you have to use the original subscribing address
([email protected])to do the unsubscribing...

OR, if you did indeed subscribe from "[email protected]" and are now asking
to unsubscribe from that address, BUT have ignored all the automated requests for
confirmation...

THEN you sir have basically farted in a crowded elevator. Any way you slice it, nobody on this list has the power to fix your situation. We are all list-members just like you. The difference is that most of us want to be here, except when the farting-in-close-quarters becomes too obnoxious.
Thanks for your time.
