For OOo, "update" is really downloading the version you want from
www.openoffice.org; 3.1.1 is the current version. (CDs are also
available from vendors listed on the site, but OOo does not guarantee
them.)Versions are released far enough apart that IMHO the auto-update
is not especially helpful in any event, and it makes the startup of OOo
take longer and require an internet connection.
As for your scanner's OCR process not recognizing OOo, you might try
downloading the free Word viewer from Microsoft, and telling the
scanning software to prepare the output for Word. You should then be
able to cut and paste from the viewer into a Writer document for further
editing. (HP really needs to get their act together on this, as do a
number of other scanners.)
