I just installed Open Office for the first time. I did a custom instalation because I just want to use the Database application. When I clic the openoffie Icon I can’t open the Dabase application! Nothing happends. I tried registering the product, reparing, unistalling, installing again, in a different computer and it is always the same! Am I missing something????
OpenOffice.org is a tightly-integrated application suite -- I'm really surprised that it even gave you an option to install only Base, which is essentially useless without other parts of OOo (like Writer for report functions) and the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). I recommend that you do a default installation. It won't actually use that much more space, and nothing says you have to use the other parts if you don't want to!
Base can handle most of the same kinds of personal uses that Microsoft Access can, though its graphic interface is not as good and it's not really designed for any kind of sharing. It can connect to other kinds of database engines that are more powerful than the HSQLDB one used by default in Base, though.
