However, my normal method of creating a new document is to navigate with
the file manager to the directory I want the document in, then I right
click and choose New; Open Document Text. This new document
unfortunately always seems to have A4 as paper size and hasn't picked up
my preferred defaults.

Do you know where WinXP is picking up the document to create when done
via Windows Explorer (file manager)?
As indicated in my earlier reply, when you use the right click context
menu on an existing document, it is that document, with it's existing
formatting (eg. page size) and content that is opened, NOT a new
document. Unless you have some kind of Windows Explorer enhancement
utility installed (New; Open Document Text ???), the standard context
menu does not provide any option to open a NEW OOo default document.
Dave,

FYI, Windows XP does have a 'right click context' menu option "New"
which allows you to "create" a document. These range from Bitmap Image
to Zip files. I do not know where XP gets the defaults but the option
is there, though I have never found any use for the "feature"

Hi Andy,

As I discovered shortly after my last post, you and John are both
correct. Having investigated a bit further, I think I have found the
solution to John's issue. This worked for me, your mileage may vary.

* It may not be essential, bit I suggest closing OOo and Quickstarter first.

* Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Templates\ and rename the
file soffice.odt (eg. soffice.xxx).

* Copy the template you have set as your default from C:\Documents and
Settings\<user name>\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\template to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Templates\ and rename it soffice.odt

Apologies for the previous misinformation.

Dave

Excellent, this works perfectly. Thanks Dave!
