I am writing a novel and, while backing up, I noticed that three of the chapters have a second file by the same name but starting with ".~lock."

I have worked out that when you are working on a file, this ".~lock." version of it appears, presumably to stop two users from editing it at the same time. However, I have just turned my computer on, and there is no reason to have locked files as neither I nor anyone else is actually working on those files.

QUESTION 1
Why is this so? (is it a bug?)

QUESTION 2
Can I delete these redundant locked file entries, i.e. the ones with filename starting with: ".~lock."? (without losing data?);
- or -
will the ".~lock." entries simply go away when I next access the files by the same name?

I would be much obliged for any advice on this matter.

Many thanks, James.
