Another option is to provide the recipient with the link to download
OpenOffice for themselves. The Word crowd has been doing it to us for
years.
Another note, OpenOffice is already using XML which Microsoft is going
to be using as the default file format in the next edition of their
software. Though, not the standard as OpenOffice is supporting.
