Hello Marianne:

I can think of two possible scenarios here - others might be able to think of
more. You don't tell us what operating system your computer uses, but the
reference to a PC indicates that it is probably running Windows. You might
also tell us which methods you have tried.

The first scenario is that you remember the name of the file you created when
you saved it. In this case you should be able to find it by searching your
hard disk for the name of the file or a representative bit of it. On Windows
you can do this from the 'This Computer' icon - I believe it has changed its
name to 'Computer' on later versions of Windows, and moved to the 'Start' menu.
Even quicker, the standard place where Open Office saves documents is 'My
Documents' or its equivalent on non-Windows computers. Try looking there first.
You can search on the document name, or you can arrange the files in order of
date/time, and if you know when you were working on the file, this may help.
If you find a file that looks like it might be it, right click on it and choose
'Properties' and see if you see a reference to its being a file of type .odx
where x will be a 't' if it is a normal document or an 's' if you were working
on a spreadsheet.

Another possibility in this scenario is to go into 'File/Recent Documents'
where you should find your file.

The second scenario is that you did not have the chance to save the file before
shutting your PC. In this case, your file should be waiting to be recovered
when you restart Open Office. When it is recovered you will be able to save it
to a location you choose yourself.

If it still has not shown up, start Open Office go into Options, which I think
is on the Tools menu on Windows and look for an entry called 'Paths'. This
tells you where Open Office saves different kinds of files on your computer.
Look for the path for 'Backups' and for 'Documents', and see if you can see
your document there.

Good luck.
