Actually, if I don't have a ground-only cable handy (that I made from
a regular power cable) then I prefer to leave the electricity
connected so long as I'm not working on the motherboard, especially at
people's homes where I might be standing on carpet, etc. The dangerous
current is all in the sealed PSU, and the ground circuit will help
prevent static-related problems (which tend to kill memory, but not
all at once).


That is why I said to touch the case with the other hand. The problem is the static potential between you and the computer. Touching a bare metal part of the case will dissipate the static electricity to the case. Connecting the case to the power ground will do nothing to reduce any static between you and the computer. Also, having the computer plugged in means there are some powered components, even when the computer is switched off. Many computers do not have the rear panel switch that can be used to kill the power completely.
