[users] Writer -- Insert Picture

I don't see how to insert a small picture (icon if you prefer) in the middle of a text line. When I paste a png image in place of a character string, a new line is created above the line where I want the image and the image is placed in that new space with no ability to place text either left or right of it. The same thing happens if I use the Insert -> Picture menu item.

In case it matters, I'm using OOo 3.1.0 (build:9399) for Windows.
