Guy:

Guy, I am in the states and love OpenOffice. I have used Microsoft for years
and find OpenOffice to be more user friendly in so many ways. To answer your
question:

Calc is like Excel

Writer is like Word

Base is like Access

Impress is like Power Point

OpenOffice has a commercial sister, StarOffice by Sun. Unless you are
wanting an enterprise version or use an Asian language, I don't think you
would notice any difference between the two. My understanding is that any
extras packaged with StarOffice are available as free downloads. Many
Microsoft templates work just fine with OO.

I would like to suggest a great site:
http://openoffice.blogs.com/openoffice/ There are also many others.

For Outlook many people use Mozilla Thunderbird or Eudora (which are being
combined into one program at some future date). Also, many people use
Mozilla Firefox for a browser.

I use Base to manage my client files. If you are referring to a software to
manage the files on your computer, I think there are several open source
options available, but perhaps someone else can provide that information.

Good luck, it's a great office suite!
