I have created a test document using the tutorial at:
http://www.tutorialsforopenoffice.org/tutorial/Create_and_Modify_A_Table_of_Contents.html#3.6.Apply%20The%20Paragraph%20Style:%20Heading%202%20For%20%22Math%22|outline
However the links do not get created. In addition to the tutorial, I
followed the HELP steps below.
You can assign a cross-reference as a hyperlink to entries in a table
of contents.
1.Right-click in the table of contents, and then choose Edit
Index/Table.
2.Click the Entries tab.
3.Click the heading level that you want to assign hyperlinks to in
the Level list.
4.In the Structure area, click in the box in front of E#, and then
click Hyperlink.
5.Click in the box behind the E, and then click Hyperlink.
6.Repeat for each heading level that you want to create hyperlinks
for, or click the All levels button to apply the formatting to all
levels.
I have unmarked the Protected against manual change box in the
Index/Table Tab.
A clue. Somewhere it says the links are inserted as fields. I have
the View Fields turned on but do not see any.
Please suggest what I should try next.
Thanks

Using XPPro, OpenOffice 3.1.1
You are misinterpreting "fields"; they are talking about the fields you see
in the Entries tab. Click in the leftmost open space in the window where the
E, T, etc. are, then click Hyperlinks; ALL.
Use the right arrow if it appears to get to the far right side of the
same box, click in the open space, click Hyperlinks; ALL again, and the
display on the left should show the results as blue underlined links.
Except they don't mention ALL, which you'd normally want for a TOC, the
instructions look right; you just need to get to the right part of the box
with the E, T etc. in it.
If I've errored, I"m sure someone will correct me but I think that's all
you need.
