I've taught the MS Office Suites and programs for over 15 years and I find Open 
Office easy to use and it will open all of your Micro Soft files. I am also 
teaching Open Office to my adult students so they won't feel they are forced to 
used poorly developed operating systems like Vista.

Might be worth mentioning that OOo doesn't have an Outlook equivalent, as 
Outlook is an important part of MS Office for many people, but that there are 
good equivalents, such as Mozilla Thunderbird and the diary addon.
