From further research, it appears that a link is broken. Unfortunately,
all the fixes mentioned in the articles I am reading refer to OOo 3.0
and 3.1, and my 3.1.1 has a somewhat different directory structure.
Plus, I don't know how to fix the link. Here is some more information:

[...@devil8]$ locate libuno_sal.so.3
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org/ure/lib/libuno_sal.so.3

In /opt/openoffice.org3/basis-link there is a link "ure-link." It has a
big X on it, and in Nautilus > Properties it says:

Type:   link (broken) (inode/symlink)
Link target:    .../ure

I'm pretty sure that broken link is the source of the problem. However,
I don't know how to fix it.

It also appears that lots of people install OOo from www.openoffice.org
onto Fedora and it launches the first time, and then never again.
