I would agree that that is how it's supposed to work, but I have the same problem as the original poster: mailto links in a writer document (or calc or impress) simply do not call up kmail. I have confirmed that kmail is set as the default; I have even run the gnome configuration editor in kde to do the same, but kmail is not evoked by a ctrl-click on a mailto hyperlink. However, if the writer document is saved either as an html or pdf document, then the mailto links evoke kmail without problem from the application that opens them (firefox and acroread in my case, though konqueror and okular work equally well).
