Hi again:
Here's the way the whole install attempt went down:
OOo_1.1.4_Win32Intel_install.zip
was downloaded to
K:\Office Applications\OpenOffice\OOo_1.1.4_Win32Intel_install\
MD5SUM compared, then unzipped (Winzip 8.1) to
F:\Downloads\Programs\Office\OpenOffice.org\OOo_Install\
for installation in
C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org1.1.4
The Setup routine couldn't get beyond the "illegal operation"
popup, and was followed by a reboot initiated by me to get Winders
98SE unscrambled.
This was done twice, using downloads from different download
locations just in case, even though the MD5SUMs were the same.
At this point I'm wondering if I shouldn't just wait for a "stable"
OOo_2 and then start learning the program. I don't use Macrocrap
ANYTHING any more than absolutely necessary, and most of what I
do have is in Info Select (mostly .txt & some HTML), formatted
stuff in WordPro, and spreadsheets in Early 123 (Lotus 123 v2.4 for
DOS for my HP200LX and Lotus 123 v5 for the desktop), NONE of which
will import/export (both directions) in OOo.
Even Lotus 123 v9 totally screws my spreadsheets - doesn't execute
macros properly and hashes range names - and I don't see how to
make a macro work in OOo at all.
I'm finding the whole thing a bit discouraging.

Hi:
Already did the MD5 thing -- file was verified as O.K.

That is good news. I have a couple of questions though:
1. Did you unpack to disk or try installing from winzip or whatever
unpacker you use?
2. If the latter, do the former
3. If the former, then its time to make an issue.

Setup 1.1.4 "Illegal operation" in Win98SE
OpenOffice 1.1.4
OOo 1.1.0 was running just fine; I decided to upgrade to 1.1.4 and got
the following error message consistently when the Setup file tried to
do its thing. It never got to any configuration dialogs:

I have since upgraded (again) to OOo_1.1.0 but still would like to get
version 1.1.4 to install. Thus far files downloaded from two sources
have given the same (non)-result. Failures are consistent and
repeatable.
It may be a good idea to verify that the file you have downloaded is a
valid file. You can do this using the MD5SUM utility as described on
the download page.
