Hello Mark,

1) OpenOffice.org includes text treatment, spreadsheet, drawing
program, presentation and a few more, but no program to treat photos,
make thumbnails etc.
There's another Open Source program that works with graphics, photos,
drawings etc. It's called The Gimp and you can download it for free
from http://www.gimp.org/

2) The documentation about OpenOffice.org can be found at

a good one to start with is the Getting Started Guide:
