I know of no open source text editor or layout program that can do what
InDesign does here. In fact, I don't know of any program at all that
can do it. And OOo will probably be the last to enable the feature, if
even it ever does. OOo/Linux did not even recognize most OpenType fonts
at all until the very recent version 3.2.

If you are accustomed to InDesign I suggest you look at Scribus. The
development version (1.3.5.1) is officially not to be used for
production work, but I recently used it to complete a 140 page book
with no significant problems. Scribus is a layout app with the same
"way of thinking" as InDesign. Of all the open source apps, Scribus
will probably be the first to enable OTF ligatures and true small caps.

I formerly used MS Office, Illustrator and Photoshop with layout in
InDesign. Then I switched from MS Office to OOo. Then I switched from
Windows to Linux. Then I replaced Illustrator with Inkscape,
Photoshop with the Gimp and InDesign with Scribus. It's not quite as
smooth as it was with the proprietary tools, but my files are not being
held hostage by corporations that don't care about anything beyond
extracting as much of my cash as possible.
