All, I attempted to install OOo 3.2 onto my Dell t5400 with Windows XP Pro x64, and the installer halted after the preliminary unpacking and preparation phase, when beginning the actual install. The message said "The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86).... blah-blah".
The directory existed, had many programs already in it, and had no visible security settings or access constraints. I checked with my corporate Help Desk, who informed me that I am indeed still a local administrator on my own machine. They suggested rebooting, just to be sure (yeah, the usual Windows solution...). I did so. Same problem. So I tried downloading Go-oo instead. Maybe a different installer... Same problem. Thinking that it might be something screwy about the directory itself, I launched the installer again, just to watch if it provided an opportunity to redirect to a different target directory... The installer breezed through the process and announced success. No error this time. Surprised, I located and launched 3.2, and it appears to be properly installed and working. So, apparently, if you encounter the same error, just keep relaunching the installer until its mood improves, and it will (might?) eventually perform the installation with no other changes on your part. (This advice is based on a sample of one, and is therefore suspect.)
