Now I get it - being such a West Coaster I had completely forgotten
that there were ZIPs that began with zeroes. I can see now the
accuracy of the statement "they are not numbers".

Although ironically if the sorter dropped the leading zero and placed 
2115 at the front of the list, that's exactly where I'd want it
anyway :-)
