Well lucky for them OOo does use a Windows format: OpenDocument Format.
Many applications, even on embarrassing setups using Windows, can work
with OpenDocument.
Some legacy applications need a nudge, though, and
since you were also looking for a a plug-in have them use this:
http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/
It saves both you and them a lot of trouble and lost data.
