If you wish to change the style of your document a few pages in, you
can do this by creating and using suitable styles - page styles,
paragraph styles, and so on. If you want these styles to be
available in future documents, you can do this by:
o including the styles in a template (even the default template)
that you use when creating these documents, or
o importing the required styles where necessary from an existing
document. (To do this, open the Styles and Formatting window, click
the New Style from Selection button, and select Load Styles... .)
Brian, this works as you describe for Writer docs, but does not work
for Calc. I wonder why? BUG???
You can save styles in a Calc template, but no: you don't appear to be
able to load styles from another spreadsheet document. Is it a bug?
I suspect it's a feature!

I researched the bug list. This is a defect that has been around since
OOo v2.3 but it does not seem to have any developer attention. It has
only one vote.
See http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=84661
You can bet that I will be voting for this issue!
