Thank you Franz, this guide is excellent. Unfortunately I
didn't a way to
remove the word 'figure'. It seems that figure and the
number following it
are seen by OO as one chunck and hence can't be separated.
If all fails I'll
simply do it manually. Thanks again for the link.

Hi Bashar,
did you take a look at the chapter 12 of the
openoffice.org writer guide?
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/w/images/f/f2/0200WG3WriterGuideOOo3-2.pdf
this is also related to your other poster about the table
of contents. other guides are available at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Chapters
wish you luck!
Franz

I can't find it now (what's new, eh?), but I'm sure I recall
seeing a place where you could modify the wording of captions;
e.g. "Figure", "Table" etc. Or was that a pipe dream?
I'll report back if I can remember it later maybe.

Insert > Caption: allows you to use the wording you mentioned.
However, there does not seem to be a simple way to number the item
consecutively without also having a title. As far as removing the title
name in the caption, Find and Replace will do this. Warning, if removing
"figure", you might not want to use "Replace all" unless you are sure
that you have not used the word "figure" in the text of your document in
a different sense.
