Hi Welcome to OpenOffice
I assume the squiggly lines under your words are in red. This shows
that the word processor considers the words have been spelled
incorrectly.
Could I suggest that you select the whole document (>Edit >Select all)
and then see if there is one language defined for the document you are
using. at the bottom of the writer window should be firstly the Page
number, secondly the "Default" and then thirdly should show the
lnguage you are using to spell in. If that is not the language you
expect then right click and choose another language and see if that
sorts out your problem.
If this is not clear or if there is another problem then please reply
to the list and include the operating system you are using (windows,
Linux or Mac OS) together with its version and the version number of
OOo you are using.

Horace, most attachments do not make it to the list, so we did not see
your screen capture. But once you have the right language dictionary
installed and being applied, you should find the spell checking works as
usual (right-clicking the identified unrecognized word to get a list of
possible alternatives and other options).
