Correct. And if you sent the files to another user - even if you
remembered to send both - then the arrangement would work only if the
target file ended up in an identical place in the other user's file
structure. That would be very unlikely (unless you carefully
arranged it to be so).

Thanks for confirming that Brian. So, it would appear that there is
no real workaround for OOo Writer? That's too bad, but still not good
enough reason to use MS Word (which wouldn't work on my Debian machine
anyway), because that is quite a decent option to embed a document
into another document that then, unless it is deleted, becomes a
repository to keep associated documents with the parent regardless of
whether the originals are deleted or not.
Do you know whether there is any broader user demand for that kind of
functionality that might inspire the OOo developers to consider
including something like that?

Gentlemen:
A question occurred to me while reading this thread. Would not the
following achieve your goal of an embedded document accessed by Icon?
Or have I misunderstood the issue?
In main document do the following:
* Insert | Object | OLE Object
* In the 'Insert OLE Object' dialog select 'Further Objects'.
* In the next dialog, 'Insert Object'.
* Checkbox 'Create from File',
* Browse to the document you want to embedded,
* Checkbox 'Display as Icon'.
* You now have the option to change the icon and the icon text.
* You can change some of the frame's properties for location and
size. e.g.. Lock position
* And you can do the same for the 'object' of the frame.
You can now open the "embedded" document, by double-clicking the Icon.
This method does have some less than desirable quirks when dealing with
the frame and its object.
