Because you started your question by replying to another post it is hard to
tell which part of the email is yours and which belongs to previous posters.

This is also more relevant because you top posted your question.

For new questions please send a new email. If you feel it closely relates to

the previous email please then at least change the subject of the email. My
email program, among others, allows users to ignore an existing thread
(subject) where i will not see any new emails on the topic.

When replying to list email trim out the information that is not relevant to

your reply and reply after the points you are answering,

Correct, in the recent history of the File Menu the last few files worked
with, irrespective of file-type, are shown. I think from memory the number
of
files can be reset... but am not sure.

This "main" file sounds like the Microsoft "Normal.dot" file which does not
exist in Writer. But if you read up on styles and templates you can set any
template to load as the default template. You can open the templates folder
where you have a selection of "default" files for letters, memos and
invoices
for example. You did not say which version of OO.o you are running on so i
cannot give a more specific link to the relevant docs:

In OO.o there are several paths that can be set in the "Tools - Options...
OpenOffice.org - Paths" Menu, including where you find documents.
