Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. Unfortunately, nothing
works and I cannot live with Italics where I don't want therm. If I
uninstall OOo, including removal of the program folders found at:
c:\Program files > OpenOffice.org 3 (Windows XP)
and all references to OOo in the System Registry
and then download a completely new copy of OOo, do you think that might
solve the problem of my text becoming italicised when I select and bold it?
One last thought before I do that ... I use tables a lot and they have
bold-italic headers. Is there any way this style could have been copied
into my default or body-text styles, by accident?

If so, James, it should be visible when you check the styles by the
methods I suggested.
Would you like to send me a copy of a sample document off list to see if
I can see anything in the style settings?
