You don't say what you've done or what happens. After you download the package from www.openoffice.org, you have to install it. Did you do that? In Windows, to install it, just double click on the downloaded file. When it's installed, you'll want to use "Writer" to work on text documents. Again, in Windows, there should be an OpenOffice.org folder containing icons for the various components, where you can select Writer.
